A Voice for the Voiceless

Mohammed, who was born in 2000, had endured years of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her family. In January 2019, she boarded a flight to Thailand with the intention of seeking asylum in Australia. However, her passport was confiscated upon arrival in Bangkok, and she was detained by authorities.

Undeterred, Mohammed barricaded herself in a Bangkok airport hotel room and used social media to plead for help. Her tweets quickly went viral, catching the attention of human rights organizations and journalists around the world. Within days, she was granted asylum by Canada, where she has since resettled.
